Before you submit your application

    Prospective applicants should be familiar with the NYC Highway Rules.

      All applicants must obtain a commercial general liability insurance policy. For specific requirements please refer to the NYC Highway Rules, linked on 'About' tab.

        All applicants must first register with DOT by completing a Registration Application, available on the 'About' tab. Upon submission of a properly completed registration application and the required insurance the applicant will be issued an ID number, referred to as a permittee number.

          Businesses that are Corporations or Partnerships must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Sole proprietors may use their Social Security Number.

            Design plans of the proposed canopy location noting sidewalk dimensions.
            • 6
              The fee for a canopy permit is $50 per year.

                Steps to apply in person:

                Complete the Application for Roadway and Sidewalk Permits, linked above.
                • 2
                  Submit the completed application in person to the Permit Office located in the borough in which the canopy installation will take place. All Permit Office locations are available in the contact information below. Please note that applicants in Manhattan must submit their applications in person to the Highway Inspection Quality Assurance (HIQA) Unit at the address listed below.
