Unless otherwise signed, vehicle combinations (tractor plus trailer) exceeding the size and weight restrictions (13 feet 6 inches in height, 8 feet in width, and 55 feet in length - bumper to bumper, tractor plus trailer) are required to obtain from the New York City Department of Transportation a "Daily Over-dimensional Permit" for travel on New York City roadways. Vehicles must obtain a permit for each portion of a trip (for example, one permit is needed to travel to a destination within the City and another is needed to travel back out).
